About this exam
The Engineering Services Examination (ESE), also known as the Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam, is conducted annually by UPSC to recruit engineering graduates into prestigious Group A and Group B technical posts across Ministries such as Defence, Power, Telecommunications, Railways, and Water Resources. It is open to candidates with a B.E./B.Tech (or equivalent recognised qualification such as AMIE) in one of four engineering streams: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication. The selection process runs in three stages: a Preliminary examination (objective, stream-specific), a Main examination (conventional/descriptive, stream-specific), and a Personality Test. Selected candidates typically join as Assistant Executive Engineer or equivalent, with a structured promotion path through Senior Scale, Junior Administrative Grade, and beyond.
